What Is Biochemical Pregnancy and How to Cope Up With It

The term biochemical pregnancy refers to an early miscarriage. It is basically a pregnancy, the existence of which the couples may not be aware of, in most of the cases. However, a biochemical pregnancy is diagnosed when the couple has gone for assisted reproduction techniques like IVF and ICSI because the pregnancy test is taken up very early in such cases.

But a few symptoms do make it clear that biochemical pregnancy occurred even when you were planning a baby naturally and these symptoms include a heavier period with abdominal pain, severe cramping and a little more discomfort than usual. However, some females who might have experienced an early pregnancy loss may not even come to know since there were no symptoms at all.

What exactly happens in a biochemical pregnancy?

In the case of a chemical pregnancy or biochemical pregnancy, there is embryo implantation in the uterus wall but the development of the embryo is not apt. Thus even though you get a positive pregnancy test later on such a pregnancy gets perished soon. Initially the HCG count will seem to rise but then suddenly there will be a fall in the count. That’s the reason why doctors suggest that one should get excited and make the pregnancy announcement only after the ultrasound test as it is the final one to confirm a pregnancy.

Reasons for biochemical pregnancy

As per the available studies, biochemical pregnancies may be due to any of the following reasons:

1. Thin lining of uterine wall
2. Fibroids in the uterus
3. Genetic defect in sperm or egg or both
4. Abnormality of embryo
5. Immune system problems during conception such as Herpes, Thyroid and syphilis.
6. It may even be due to unknown reasons

Some research suggests that if you are planning a baby then it is better to avoid dyeing hair or using hair color if you want to play safe game.

When the couple has gone through certain fertility procedures like IUI, IVF and ICSI then they have to be extra careful. It is better to follow all the instructions as given by the clinic to save the pregnancy from any probable loss or an early miscarriage.

However, the good news is, it is reported that females who have faced biochemical pregnancies can perfectly plan healthy babies in future. The only thing they should do is, consult the doctor and follow his advice so that the pregnancy can be carried on for the full term.

Coping up with an Early Miscarriage

It is true that when the couple is aware or at least suspects an early miscarriage, this can be devastating and heart breaking. But with mutual understanding, the couple should try to cope up with the loss. Blaming either of the partners for the loss will not bring out the solution. It is better to talk to the doctor about the problem and let him decide what should be the solution for this. Normally, doctors suggest waiting for one menstrual cycle before the couple plans the pregnancy again.
