Pregnancy is considered to be one of the most special times in a woman’s life, as she is bringing a new life into the world. However, it can be different for different women. Some may face a lot of side effects during pregnancy, while others may not experience any at all. A major problem that some women face during pregnancy is acne, which is likely to develop in the first trimester due to hormonal changes in the body. Acne treatment during pregnancy can be difficult and frustrating, as it’s important to be mindful of any medications taken to control acne so as not to harm the fetus. Most acne treatments are not safe to use during pregnancy, as over-the-counter drugs for treating acne can cause birth defects in the baby.

Treatments to be avoided during pregnancy:

Acne treatment which contains Accutane : Studies have shown that this ingredient could potentially be very dangerous for babies, causing birth defects or even miscarriages. It’s important to note that this ingredient should not be used even during the breast-feeding period.

Tetracycline usage too is not recommended: Tetracycline is an oral antibiotic that is used to treat adults and teenagers; however, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it may cause poor bone development in the baby. Tetracycline is also said to cause discolored teeth.

Medications containing female hormones: Researchers are still inconclusive on this subject, which are related with the development of the fetus and the female hormones. Certain hormones can be passed on to the baby either during breastfeeding or during pregnancy. But then, it is thought to cause birth defects in the baby. However, more research is needed to better understand how these hormones may affect the developing fetus.

Acne during pregnancy is a common occurrence, but it can still be very stressful for mothers-to-be. The hormonal changes and physical demands of pregnancy make it difficult to control acne. Acne can cause a great deal of anxiety for pregnant women who are worried about using topical drugs or any kind of treatment during such a vulnerable time.

Women can avoid and control acne during pregnancy by following a simple, easy-to-follow method with no side effects:

Drink plenty of water for clear skin and to prevent acne breakouts. Exercising during pregnancy can help increase blood circulation to all parts of the body, preventing acne. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables after thoroughly washing them. Pregnant women should avoid junk foods and foods prepared in the microwave oven. Cleanliness is key to preventing acne; change pillow covers, clean hairbrushes and combs, wash your face with mild soap and cold water, and consider massaging and steaming your face for clearer skin.
