However, there are several things you can do to ease upper back pain, so the last weeks of your are more comfortable. By taking measures to reduce discomfort, you can focus your energy on your soon-to-arrive baby.

Upper back pain is common in the later stages of pregnancy as the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby. This puts pressure on the ribs, especially on the right side, which can cause pain in the shoulders and upper back. These pains can be sharp and may sometimes be accompanied by heartburn.

It’s common for women’s breasts to increase in size during pregnancy, which can cause strain on the neck, upper back and ribs from the extra weight pulling down on the shoulders. Hormonal changes loosen muscles and ligaments in preparation for delivery, so you may feel more flexible and less balanced during pregnancy. You can also do chest stretches in the doorway. These are especially good for your shoulders by rotating them up and back, and lifting the ribs away from the uterus.
