Pregnancy Massage Therapy and Acupuncture

Whether you should have massage or acupuncture when you’re pregnant has been debated in some circles, causing confusion with some pregnant women. When you’re pregnant, of course you want the best for your baby-to-be! That’s why these two natural health care modalities are so important to many women. Acupuncture and massage therapy are relatively safe in pregnancy – however it is crucial that any practitioner make sure he/she has proper training as misusing these treatments could result in complications for mother and child alike.

We understand that while some professionals are concerned with learning how to massage the pregnant, others are very excited to become more skilled at it. However, when it comes down to it, all you really need is a professional who will be able to relieve those sore spots and aches (and some other benefits as well) but also one who is properly trained and licensed when dealing with physical therapy patients in general, you’ll want someone in good standing or certified by their respective therapeutic organization (these days it’s probably best if they belong to a national or international body, such as ARCBPT). Other considerations might be whether they work out of a clinic or via out-call arrangements.

During pregnancy, it is important not to use any acupuncture points on your sacrum, abdomen, hands or feet as they encourage contractions. Also, make sure you don’t get your needles inserted too deeply as this can cause complications when pregnant. If you are getting acupuncture, ensure you find someone who is trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

There really is no good reason why you shouldn’t be able to enjoy either acupuncture or massage therapy while you’re pregnant. Just do your due diligence and make sure that your masseuse is a registered massage therapist and that your acupuncture is being performed by a TCM practitioner. Afterwards, have a happy, healthy pregnancy!
